My carbon monoxide detector is going off, what should I do next?

Is your alarm notifying you with this message?: “Dangerous Level of Carbon Monoxide detected! Evacuate immediately. Dial 911!”

If “Yes,” – follow these instructions:

  1. This is an emergency/life safety situation.
  2. Find a phone away from the area and immediately call 911.
  3. Immediately move to fresh air – outdoors or by an open door or window. Check to make sure that all residents are accounted for. Do not re-enter the premises or move away from the open door or window until the emergency services responder has arrived, the premises have been aired out, and your carbon monoxide alarm returns to and remains in its normal operating condition. Be sure to follow the directions from utility employees or emergency responders who are on site.

If "No," and your alarm is providing a non-emergency message, follow the alarm's instructions. You may also view the user guide online:

How do I de-activate my carbon monoxide detector?

*NOTE – DEACTIVATION IS PERMANENT, AND CANNOT BE REVERSED

How to permanently de-activate the alarm:

This CO alarm contains a sealed-in, non-replaceable / non-removeable battery. Once it reaches the end of its service life, or after 10 years, whichever comes first, the unit will alert you that it needs to be replaced, and you will need to install a new CO alarm.

You can permanently deactivate the unit by using a tool to break the tab underneath the cross-hatched area and moving the activation switch to the DEACTIVATED position. Full instructions are listed under “How to Install This Alarm” in the user guide online:
 (English Version) or (Spanish Version).

I have had my alarm for less than 10 years, but it's telling me that I have a low battery and I need to replace the unit. Am I doing something wrong?

You may not have properly activated the back-up battery – the alarm will not work properly until the battery is activated. If you have activated your battery, your alarm should not show this message until 10 years from activation.
